Emanuel Nine Memorial

Located on the restructured grounds of the historic Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Emanuel Nine Memorial honors the nine victims and five survivors of the tragedy of June 17, 2015.

The Memorial represents the spirit of forgiveness and resilience lovingly demonstrated by the victims’ families, the survivors, and the greater Charleston community.

This unique tribute will offer visitors a permanent sacred place for quiet reflection through a beautiful Memorial Courtyard, a Survivors’ Garden, a Visitors’ Garden, and a Contemplation Basin. The hope is that the Memorial, as a place of contemplation and connection, will ignite meaningful conversations and spur purposeful actions that set the stage for eradicating racism.

June 17, 2015

On June 17, 2015, an evening of church meetings and Bible Study ended in tragedy for a group of the church’s clergy and members who welcomed a 21-year-old man to join them. That young man opened fire on the group, killing nine of them.

In the wake of the devastation of June 17, 2015, the faith of the Emanuel 9, their families and survivors illuminated the way: it would be by the amazing grace of God.
