If all goes as planned, the Mother Emanuel Memorial Foundation will break ground this fall.
The memorial honoring the nine members of Emanuel AME Church who were killed in a mass shooting on June 17, 2015, and the five people who survived the attack, will replace a portion of the church’s paved parking lot.
Designed by Michael Arad, it includes three main elements and could cost about $20 million. The foundation, which is independent from the church, can account for a little more than half of the amount needed.
